Shaina is my name, I am of the wolf tribe. I am a woman of the Nisga’a; and I hail from the house of Chief Duuk.
My name is Shaina Richelle. I’m a Nisga’a artist and fashion designer from Laxgalts’ap, B.C. I graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree at Emily Carr University in 2024, supported by BC Arts Foundation, BC Hydro, and Indspire. I work in multiple mediums, including sewing, screen printing, intaglio, sculpture, painting, digital art, and various drawing materials. My thesis, “The Musings and Makings of an Indigiqueer Time Meddler” focuses on chronopolitics.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vancouver Island University, supported by scholarships from Indspire, Parksville Lioness Club, and the Isaac Tait Award from VIU. My other academic achievements include the Dean’s honour list (Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences) and the Emerging Artist scholarship from YVR Art Foundation to create “REDress, Regrow (Do Not Pluck Me).” on display 2022 at YVR Int: airport 2022 and early 2023 at the Museum of Vancouver.
Most recently, in March 2024, I participated in Indigenous Haute Couture: Digital Embellishments, a four-week artist residency with Banff Centre. Some of my most recent works, 70s Gigi and 90s Momma, is currently displayed in YVR Int. Airport for 2024 as part of the Emerging Artist scholarship program before it visits the Museum of Vancouver in Early 2025.
